Be KIND to your SELF

There is more to health and wellness than just the medicine we take or strategies we employ! In general, people have a tendency to beat themselves up – in fact, for the most part, they are very good at self-abuse.

Self-deprecating debilitation is way too real for far too many people. People in chronic pain, fibro fighters, patients fighting chronic illness and disease all have ONE COMMON CHALLENGE THAT AFFECTS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US THE SAME – depreciating ones self, is abusive and disabling.

The negative impact that “beating ourselves up” has on our health, wellness, and ability to heal quickly and easily, is tremendous. I hear self-deprecating comments all the time in my practice, patients at the end of their rope, and even friends and family (who are otherwise healthy) – At some point in time we all will fall prey or victim to the vampire – SELF-PITY Chronically ill people – tend to fall into the SELF-PITYING ZONE when struggling with the challenges of chronic pain, illness, or disease.

Self-pity is easily the most destructive of the non-pharmaceutical narcotics; it is addictive, gives momentary pleasure and separates the victim from reality.

It truly sucks waking up stiff and sore, sickly, or still exhausted. When almost every day, day after day there is struggle and strife, exhaustion takes its toll on our minds, bodies, and soul. Naturally, we find our minds in the pity zone, and guess what? THAT IS OK – Don’t hide from your self-pity in shame or embarrassment, rather, face it and accept it as a fact of your life… for about 90 seconds, Embrace the fact that you are flawed and fallible … just like everyone else and then it’s time to “LACE UP” for a battle –

Of all human habits, chronic self-pity is perhaps the most unhealthy. Why? Self-pity is like a psychic vampire that drains our hope, happiness, gratitude, and good humor.

Life can be very hard, and the toughest of us are still vulnerable to flare-ups. We may suffer physically, emotionally, and mentally. And sometimes there really isn’t anything you can do about it.

When you experience a flare-up, or you’ve been going through a “ruff patch of chronic dis “ease” – recognize there is always a process of grieving. Whatever would have happened this day if not for the flare-up won’t happen. The purpose of this grief is to

  1. Acknowledge the loss we have suffered (our physical agility, emotional regulation, energy and tolerance, cognitive clarity – whatever it may be)
  2. Separate ourselves from the future that is not to be, and
  3. Prepare for a different future that will have its own positive aspects.

When we make it through the first two stages, but don’t start on the third, we get stuck in self-pity, dwelling on what was lost, skewing our “sight” on the future, reducing our ability to see the possibility that the day, and life, in general, can still be good. So how can you help yourself stop focusing on what went wrong for you and turn towards the future?

All beliefs limit our behavior in some way and many have a positive effect. However, some beliefs reinforce negative behavior patterns that have a deleterious effect on the way we think and interact with other people.

NLP offers an effective set of tools for reprogramming your belief set and revising the way you view your world in order to act more positively within it. Change your focus from what you cannot do to what you can do, from what you lack to what you have, from the way things are to the way you will make them become, from the person you are to the person you plan to be, from the problems facing you to their possible solutions, and from the difficulties you’re mired in, to the opportunities available. Since we become what we think about, it is essential that we focus on the right things.

Cannabis can be used to support health and wellness in so many ways. From being a “SUPER FOOD” in its raw state – I use leaves like lettuce or spinach, I also enjoy juicing the flower, leaf & stalk as well as adding leaf or flower to nutri-bullets daily. During a flare up, I use cannabis as a topical application and apply it liberally to reduce inflammation and provide relief. I inhale (combust or vape) a fair amount as well to help facilitate a marvelous meditative state ideal for self-hypnosis, to reduce pain and pressure of the achiness and swelling AND I consume edibles to help me relax and sleep.
